What Is a Confined Space?

Confined-space work requires more than recognizing a restricted area. Personnel need to understand hazards, entry controls, communication, atmospheric conditions, and emergency readiness before work begins.

Understanding the hazard

A confined space may expose personnel to hazardous atmospheres, restricted access, engulfment, energy sources, or other conditions that make normal work and emergency response more difficult.

Control before entry

Safe entry starts with hazard identification, isolation where required, atmospheric testing, suitable PPE, an entry authorization process, communication arrangements, and clearly assigned responsibilities.

Emergency readiness matters

An entry plan should consider how personnel will communicate and how an emergency will be managed. Rescue readiness should be established before entry rather than improvised after an incident occurs.
