Working at Height: Core Safety Principles
Working at height requires effective planning before personnel leave the ground. The objective is to prevent falls wherever possible and manage residual risk with appropriate systems and equipment.
Plan the work first
The task, work area, access method, potential fall exposure, equipment, weather or environmental conditions, and emergency arrangements should be considered before work begins.
Use the hierarchy of controls
Where possible, eliminate the need to work at height or use collective protection before relying solely on personal fall-protection equipment.
Prepare for rescue
Fall protection does not end with arresting a fall. Work planning should also consider how a suspended or injured person can be recovered safely and promptly.
